Canadians of African Heritage lineage can trace their roots to a continent where music is an integral part of everyday life. Music is used both in times of joy and sadness, to celebrate as well as memorialize.

The unique rhythms and sounds of African origin have inspired many generations. Many Africans converted to Christianity after their arrival in the New World and learned religious songs to which they added African beats and melodies. They also created music to relate stories from the homeland s and families left behind, called "griot" methodology..

These songs that developed termed "spirituals" often dealt with religious subjects that expressed the indomitable spirit of an oppressed people. These songs became a powerful source of inspiration, love and hope. The unique sound of "Downeast Gospel" continues to this day to stimulate new interpretations and musical compositions.

The Black Cultural Society of Nova Scotia and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC Radio), are proud to announce the release of a traditional music compilation album title: "LORD You Brought Me A Mighty Long Way"... An African Nova Scotian Musical Journey.

The album will consist of a double CD or cassette tape package and has already been nominated in two different categories for the 1998 East Coast Music Awards, and submitted for nomination in two different categories for the 1998 Juno Awards. The archival showcase is made up of spiritual music selected from the Dr. Helen Creighton Collection as well as other sources. These records are an impressive array of music and musicians blended to produce pure magic!

The contemporary showcase is an exciting and spiritually motivating combination of Nova Scotian talent under the direction of Mr. Woody Woods (N.S. Mass Choir Director).

Featured artists include: Jeremiah Sparks, Novalea Buchan, Wallace Smith, Linda Carvery, Kim and Delvina Bernard, Debbie DeLeon and Joe Colley, to name a few. Some of the musical groups are: Nova Scotia Mass Choir, Gospel Heir’s Family Choir, & The Cornwallis St. Men’s Brotherhood. All put together with the collective sounds of such musicians as: Bucky Adams, Carson Downey, Joe Murphy and Gary Steed.

This project was made possible in part by the Canada Nova Scotia Cooperation Agreement for Economic Diversification (Year of Music Program). This is part of the on-going effort of the Black Cultural Society to continue Promoting, Protecting and Preserving Black Culture in Nova Scotia in celebration of our 20th Anniversary.
