Rev. Dr. W.P. Oliver Night of Honour

February 13, 2010

The annual Rev. Dr. W.P. Oliver Night of Honour was held on February 13, 2010 at the Black Cultural Centre. Admission to the Night of Honour event was free but the voluntary donations and book sales amounting to $655.00 will offset any expenses for the evening and will contribute to the work at the Centre.

The assembled crowd was treated to a special cello solo by Miss Maia Bruce. The Centre resonated as she presented her beautiful performance. Ms. Pat Watson, accomplished jazz / gospel vocalist, thrilled the audience with her joyful, soulful renditions. Among her highlights were the performance of a very celebratory “Dance Like David Danced’ and her performance of “Georgia”, dedicated to the memory of those who came to Nova Scotia’s shores from the Southern U.S. Ms Watson’s musical accompaniment was ably provided by the Nova Gospel Ensemble, musicians who are great friends of the Black Cultural Centre.

Ms Denise Allen, Vice President of the Black Cultural Society, presented a tribute to six African-Nova Scotian women who had been featured on the 2010 African Heritage Month brochure and poster. The six who were described as “Leading Ladies, Lasting Legacies” are Edith Cromwell, Geraldine Young, Ada Fells, May Sheppard, Beryl Braithwait and Willena Jones.

Pastor Brian Johnston of Zion Baptist Church, Truro, the guest speaker, challenged the audience to be active community leaders in the spirit of the Late Dr. Oliver. His words and his delivery were an inspiration.

Mr. Cecil Wright, the Master of Ceremonies assisted Dr. Leslie Oliver, Black Cultural Society President present the four 2010 inductees to the Wall of Honour: Irvine Carvery, Wiley Cain, Carson Jackson and Dennis Jackson. The Night of Honour 2010 was a great celebration for everyone who was there.
